Privacy Policy

In order to use this service, we will never ask you for your name, number, profile picture, or anything that could identify you. Because we do not support accounts, there is no need for a username or password.  We do not ask for this information because we want to protect your privacy.  All message Content sent to DeleteBin is encrypted in a way that prevents us from reading it.  Furthermore, all information received by DeleteBin is systematically deleted either after a short time period or after a message has been retrieved.

Third Party Code/Assets/Tracking

Most sites use 3rd party code, assets, or tracking mechanisms.  Some examples:

  • Many sites use Google Fonts to get nice looking fonts on their site.
  • Most sites use JavaScript hosted on 3rd party CDNs.
  • The vast majority of sites use 3rd party JavaScript libraries such as jQuery.
  • Many sites offering free services or information subsidize development and hosting costs by serving ads.
  • The majority of sites use 3rd party analytics, like Google Analytics, to track everything people do on their site and upload that information to a 3rd party (often in another country) for further analysis.

We do none of the above because we feel that doing so puts our users' privacy potentially at risk.  Our site uses very little code compared to most.  All of our code can be accessed in non-minified form.  We do all of this so that people can actually read what little code there is and see what is going on - it keeps things much more transparent.

The one exception to this rule is our use of hCaptcha as described in the below Cookies section.  However, keep in mind that hCaptcha is not used by default and their usage is isolated to a dedicated URL and enforced with a content security policy that prevents their code from ever accessing anything having to do with any message Content.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

A cookie is a small piece of data that is stored on your computer or mobile device. We make very limited use of cookies. Here is an example of how we use a cookie:

By default our site will try to determine if you prefer dark theme websites or light theme websites and display our site in your preferred theme.  However, maybe you are working outside that day and click the light theme icon to make the site easier to read in the sunlight.  When that happens, we will set a temporary value on your device which stores your preferred theme setting.  If we did not do this, you would have to switch the theme on every page load.  This temporary value is automatically deleted when you close your browser.

While all cookies issued by DeleteBin are session cookies which are deleted automatically as soon as you close your browser, there is one place that a 3rd party can set a cookie on our site. Please note that this is not a default scenario:

When creating a message, you have the option to require the recipient of that message to first pass a CAPTCHA before they can load the encrypted message for decryption.  When the recipient loads the message link, our 3rd party CAPTCHA provider, hCaptcha loads JavaScript to complete the CAPTCHA verification and therefore has the ability to set cookies and gain some information on the recipient.

Information you Provide

Messages. DeleteBin cannot decrypt or otherwise access the Content of your messages. DeleteBin stores end-to-end encrypted messages on its servers for delivery to recipients with whom you have shared the link provided when you created the message.

Additional technical information is stored on our servers, including randomly generated IDs, message time-to-live (TTL), reads-to-live (RTL), and other material that is necessary to transmit messages. DeleteBin limits this additional technical information to the minimum required to operate the Services.

User Support. If you contact us, any personal data you may share with us is kept only for the purposes of researching the issue and contacting you about your case.

Logging Information. When you use our Services, or any website for that matter, your computer/device/browser will send certain information that is logged by our servers.  The information logged is described in the Common Log Format.  We keep Logging Information for 24 hours after which it is automatically deleted.

It is possible that some of the common Logging Information such as your IP address is logged by others while you are using the Services - this is how the Internet works and is not something DeleteBin can control.  Most privacy policies never bother to tell you this.  For example, every time you even access a website, your ISP can and often does log that you resolved that site's hostname (they commonly sell this information to 3rd parties).  What this means is that when you use our Services, you are providing information not only to us, but also providing some limited information to any network operator that is involved in connecting your device with our web server.  Using a VPN or TOR (or both) can help you get around this involuntary data submission problem.

Information we May Share

We do not share your information with anyone unless compelled to do so in the following scenarios:

  • To meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request.
  • To enforce applicable Terms, including investigation of potential violations.
  • To detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security, or technical issues.
  • To protect against harm to the rights, property, or safety of DeleteBin, our users, or the public as required or permitted by law.

Keep in mind that we are limited to sharing information that we have - primarily encrypted information that we cannot decrypt that has not yet been deleted.

Updates

We will update this privacy policy as needed so that it is current, accurate, and as clear as possible. Your continued use of our Services confirms your acceptance of our updated Privacy Policy.

Please also read our Terms of Use which also governs the terms of this Privacy Policy.
